Although many will argue, there are a couple good anti-virus programs like mentioned however none are good at stopping malware/adware. My suggestion is to use Firefox with the NoScript addon and the AdBlock addon. The combination of those 2 addons not only make surfing the internet 2x as fast but they ensure that you are allowing only the scripts that you want on the page. You can set it to always allow certain scripts on certain sites so its only a pain to setup once and then its fine. I've found that combo can stop even the most virus prone users from getting infected ;)
Good luck and let me know if you still have issues, I can point you to pre boot scanners which can work if safe mode is broken (new viruses are doing that now).
