The "side quests" are part of the (awesome) story, though. Going through them is more like finishing the story, the game simply allows you to beat the boss earlier than usual. There's really no need to level grind, the game is not all that difficult - you can play through the entire game quite comfortably without the need to grind levels at all.
Why else do you think it didn't age well? Between the music, graphics, simple story, etc, that seems hard to argue for. Disliking the game does not mean it didn't age well...
@ OP, of course the game is still fun. It's still the best JRPG ever.
