Exactly THIS.
For the record, I can't completely buy the OP's numbers because at the current sales rate (PS3 outsold the 360 WW in January only 40k). At that rate, the gap would only be down to just under 6 million by the end of Aug (before likely price adjustments). How could it get down to 4.5 million, especially when VGC keeps making adjustments that widen the gap?
As stated before by a few wise souls here, people overreacted to the PS3 sales bump in 2009 just like they did to the 360 sales bump in 2008 and the PS3's other sales bump in 2007.
So how about this, I'm going to give everyone here something to feel celebratory about: the Xbox 360 will be the best selling 3rd place console in history and the Playstation 3 will be the best selling 2nd place console in history. Glass half full, folks. Glass half full.

Fixed. :P

The PS3 gets within 1 million WW, then maybe you could say that could be true. But as it stands, that's just wishful thinking. And its also focusing on the WRONG thing.
For instance, if I wanted I could focus on the fact that, coming into this gen, MS was the underdog that was expected to be in 3rd place and Sony the 800 lb. gorilla that would dominate with a 100 million + lead like it did in the two previous gens. And, in comparison to that, to sell 33 million in roundabout 3 years is pitiful compared to expectations. But I won't do that. Instead, I celebrate how amazing its doing for a 3rd place console.
Be proud of that instead of focusing on the distant possibility of it reaching 2nd place.
