what is with all the Mario games on ipod/iphone????

I was in the app store and i saw a couple of mario games.has nintendo allowed these companies(small game developers for iphone) to whore out their biggest mascot like this??

this does not seem like what nintendo usually does.

 

so what is the deal here?
