Yeah, those freeplay events are are tedious. I have been playing it on the 360 and all I need are the ones on the Paris Area 3 (Eiffel Tower part).
All in all, its an ok game, but the missions are too short and easy. I mean pathetically easy. But when I go for freeplay events I eventually get into Alarm 5 and I get my ass kicked just for fun. 
PS - Anyone here is interested in Just Cause 2? I played the first on PS2 and felt it had potential despite many flaws. And the developer seems to be doing a great job with the sequel. I have seen some gameplay videos and It feels like a crazy, blockbuster action movie version of Mercenaries 2 (hopefully without the bugs 
)
PS2 - Oh Thanks Arcturus for the usual great job. I went up one place without earning a single trophy. Woo Hoo!
