Meh.

Not a fan. Gears is an over-rated franchise. Note the constant downward slide on most-played games list. They need to do some serious rethinking of netcode and multiplayer ideas in order to regain their momentum. Cliff and company really shot themselves in the foot with Gears 2 by under-delivering in almost every way. Lots of people are doing gears-style combat in comparable fashions, and in some cases better. Those mechanics are getting stale fast as everyone and their uncle borrows the 3PS cover and shoot formula.

The netcode needs some work (and so does the multiplayer), but frankly, it's not that bad. At least Epic tries. That's more than I can say for Infinity Ward. And I seriously doubt you've played the series in a while, because you couldn't be any more wrong. But if you're so sure in what you say, please name me a third person shooter on the 360 that's comparable to Gears 2 in graphics, gameplay, whatever. I'll wait.

I'm not talking about graphics.  It's pretty enough.  I'm not a big graphics guy, though.  *shrug*

Gears 1 elevated the genre a bit, though it got some bonus credit for being the first real next-gen big hype franchise at a time when gamers needed one.

Everything from 50 Cent Blood on the Sand to Mass Effect 2 have taken the mechanics and replicated them to a pretty fair comparison.  Everyone does cover now.  Everyone does co-op.  Everyone does vehicle/turret stuff to break up the on-foot shooting.  There's nothing that special about Gears combat.  It really is fairly standard shooter stuff.  The story's nothing special - there's 200k fans wanting to know what happens next, but no one's really too hung up on the plot.  The character's are punchlines and caricatures.

Gears 2 just didn't really innovate in any measurable way - especially, as we agreed, in the multiplayer mode.

I'll admit I am biased toward FPS over 3PS, but even so - - it's fun enough to play through, but so are lots of games.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not in any way arguing that  Gears 2 is a bad game.  I liked it well enough.  It's just my opinion that it's not a strong enough series overall to be mentioned with the elite franchises in any way except graphic quality.

"Pretty fair comparison" just isn't good enough. Gears 2 is so great because it not only has the best cover system of any game on the market (you can quickly go in and out of cover, roll into it, easy to use, not glitchy or inconsistent, etc.). Cover is an essential part of gameplay in Gears 2, and frankly, more than other game on the market (well, except for Gears 1). I've seen all of these games that use the cover system, and not only are these mechanics solely because of the Gears franchise, but they're still inferior to the original. And can you really say everyone does co-op? Where was the co-op campaign in Modern Warfare 2, the biggest shooter ever? It's funny that you mentioned how 50 Cent and Mass Effect 2 have replicated Gears 2; they've essentially taken its core and done nothing to innovate (nothing against Mass Effect 2, it's fantastic, just not its cover system). When you can find me another shooter on the market who has made the chainsaw so iconic, or the cover system, or third person shooting in general, you tell me. Because I've noticed a lot of games featuring such things after the Gears series came about (just look at the cover system in GTA4 and ME2, or the third person modes in MW2). Sounds to me like Gears 1 and 2 innovated and the competition copied.

Very well said... Gears of War to me is one of the legends.

Years from now... people will say, Gears was a poinner in the 3rd person genre for making the first truly great cover system. The game made the cover system popular and blind fire as well... although I know there were games that alread had such mechanics before gears but Gears were the first to get it right!

Fastyxx I don't know what to say to you... I can't believe there are gamers out there that don't apprecaite this 3rd person master piece... maybe you didn't give it enough time, if thats not it then you just have different taste.
