I will note that the DS carts are 512MB now. So in a year or two they can be 1 or 2 GB, which is on par with GC discs, and video compression formats would be even better, since the 2 disc GC games used lots of FMVs.
So a new handheld using the same cart format would be feasible in a year or so.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
