I think you're missing the point. It's not just paranoid fanboys trying to downplay a game that is similar to a game they like. Dante's Inferno is damn near a carbon copy of God of War's mechanics, only wrapped in a different skin.

There's a difference between a game being in the same genre as others (DMC, GoW, NG) and a game being a direct clone of another (DI, GoW).

Even GameSpot ripped into Dante's Inferno for the games wholely unoriginal ideas in its 6.5 review:

From the gothic art style and the vengeance-fueled story to the stationary camera clearly displaying the blood-splattering combat, Dante's Inferno is a wholesale imitation of the superb God of War series. Or, at the very least, it's desperately trying to be.


Also, it's highly debatable whether Devil May Cry or God of War is the better series. One focuses more on the intricacies of combat, while the other focuses more on presentation/story and incorporates puzzles heavily into the mix. If you want to argue about which has the better combat, I'd say Ninja Gaiden takes the cake.
