Before going to college, I didn't drink at all. My older brother who looks exactly like me even offered to "lose" his ID so I could have a completely valid fake ID but I declined because I just thought getting drunk was one of the dumber things you could do.
I always though what's the fun in going out and making yourself throw-up and act like an idiot?
Well after my first week of college I found out. It was the part the night band-camp ended and holy crap I got destroyed. My brother, who is evil, decided to introduce me to drinking by giving me shots of Wild Turkey chased by Shiner (Texas bock beer, it's great). I was destroyed the next morning but I had fun.
Since then, I drink. In college, I would binge drink most weekends because I was in college, undergrad. Since going to grad school, I have the occasional beer after work and some nights a nice glass of scotch (usually have a bottle of black label and a bottle of McAllen, year varies). As for why I drink, meh, I like to. I don't really get stupid drunk anymore or even drunk really. I'll actually binge drink (3-4 drinks in a night) maybe once every 3-4 months, but not often at all.
As for smoking, I think it's pretty stupid. It costs a lot of money and makes you smell like ass.
