Why do you drink/smoke/etc?

I'll never do (I'm still young ^_^ )
but really, some of my friends do, and honestly, I think the reason they do it's because it's forbidden, they always say:
smoke/ alchohol = bad so they get anoyed and do it because it's forbidden.
If someone says:
"lettuce is worse" everyone would eat lettuce
