Sony has proven that Blu-Ray i nearly future proof and the players that people are getting now are also on that path.
A firmware update to the PS3 made it support the Blu-Ray 2.0 upgrade. They also have improved how much a Blu-Ray disc can hold. Granted I don't know if Sony is the main company behind the advancements of the medium, but it shows that they can keep Blu-Ray around much longer than DVD could.
