The main complains of FFXIII can be traced back to FFX.
The no towns argument doesn't hold much ground, when you compare the number of actual towns of FFXIII with FFX, you'll see that there isn't much difference.
Linearity has also been a main issue of almost all FF games before. Even FF6 had a massive linear path with almost no exploration, until you reach the World of Ruin, which was only at about 30 hours in the game.
I agree that FFXIII has a lot of points that can drive fans away, but it also has a lot of good points, just as any FF game has. My point is, it didn't deserve the hate and the bashing it got before.
