Very true, that. But those have all been spinoffs. The last truly 'real' mainline DK game was DK64, which released like a decade ago... However, judging by all these games DK got, as well as his countless appearances in other (Mario) games, he's quite popular, and therefore, profitable. So a new 'true' DK game would make sense. Imo, that is. Besides, past mainline DK games have all sold 3 to 9 million copies, and even a lot of the 'lesser' DK games have crossed the 1 or 2 million mark. Clearly, it would seem to be a wiser move for Nintendo to release a DK game than say, a Kirby, F-Zero or Pikmin game, all of which have sold far less in the past. Not to say I wouldn't really love any of those games, 'cos I would. Very much. |
Most definitely from a business perspective it would make sense. But like some have said, all those games that sold 3+ million were made by rare. So trying to make a 'main' Donkey Kong game now would pretty much take the effort of what they've done with Mario, Metroid and Zelda this generation. In other words, 'revive' the series under a whole new development group and try to make it something completely new. And certainly I'd love for them to do so, but they need to lock down which group is the best for them to do that.
The Mario Galaxy team, which previous made one of those Donkey Kong spin-off games, may just be the best team for that. However they're still working on Mario Galaxy 2.
