When watching the Microsoft Courier video a little while ago, I started to think of a dual touch-screen clamshell handheld gaming system ...
If you hold a DS-Lite in your hand and you imagine the screen being extended to where the current abxy buttons are (with the symmetric change happening to the other screen) and then have those 4 buttons on a "Slider" device that are on some phones you would end up having more screen real estate than any other device that can be put in a pocket; you could put the d-pad on a slider aswell/instead of the abxy buttons but that might be excessive and add additional complexity to the system.
The reason I think you could hide the buttons/d-pad is that the touch screen (in particular a dual touch screen) is becoming a more dominant way to interact with a portable device and the buttons/d-pad might not be necessary for most games.
