I can understand how someone wouldn't like Shadow of the Colossus, but none of the reasons I've heard so far seem like particularly good ones.

SotC, I think, has to be approached less as just a game and more as a complete experience. I've had more fun playing other games, but as a dramatic presentation, almost nothing else comes close. SotC is the most compelling argument so far for games being a valid form of art.

A lot of people seem to be complaining about the controls, but I really liked them. The jump-grab mechanism was really well done. When I finished the game, I went back to Zelda: Twilight Princess and I felt completely limited by comparison.

And SotC is worth playing for the story alone. It's simple, but the presentation makes it unforgettable.

I think you are missing the point here. The point is the game is highly over-rated, the issues it has pile up, and though it is still a great experience, the fact is its problems should not be ignored or dismissed as they all too often are. The reason I believe people are so forgiving of them is that when all is said and done it still stands as an enjoyable game (for most people).

Since you mention TP, ask yourself what would happen if a Zelda game had those kinds of problems, people would rip it a new one that's what. Also correct me if I'm wrong but SotC was more highly rated than TP wasn't it. Even if you consider the fact that it is older that's malarky. It had all the problems of a launch title and really doesn't stand up so well with many of its contemporaries. Nevertheless it is what it is, an very enjoyable, engaging, yet shallow, technical problem ridden, work of art.
