Maybe nintendo asked for sonic in return for having mario in the olympics games sega makes
sounds like a fair deal to me.

That's the very opposite of what actually happened. Nintendo outsourced the development of M&S to Sega. "The olympics game Sega makes"... do you actually believe this game would have sold remotely as well without Mario and the other N characters? It's a Mario game, first and foremost, and Sega were lucky Nintendo was willing to involve them.

Funny because Sega holds the license rights to the Olympic games not Nintendo so how could Nintendo possible outsource it?
Sega also makes Olympic games for HD consoles, ipods, etc, they just don't have Mario in them (or Sonic)

Fine, you're right about the Olympic games license. But I think we both agree that the game wouldn't have happened had Nintendo not participated. Btw, in Japan it is even published by Nintendo...
And don't you think its success is largely based on the fact that people see it as a proper Mario game? How would "Just Sonic at the Olympic games" have sold?

No debate there. Mario greatly boosted sales of this title. Mario as a brand is huge as people equate Mario with quality and fun (unlike poor Sonic). However, Mario Sluggers, Strikers and Tennis have all just squeaked by 1m so Mario sport titles are not that big. The success of the Olympic games is truly a combination of the three elements - Mario, Sonic and sport mini-games on Wii.

I think the fact that the Mario & Sonic were marketed like crazy as opposed to next to zero advertising for stuff like Sluggers, Strikers and Tennis helped a lot too. Also, Tennis is a re-released GameCube title, soccer isn't too popular in the Americas as far as I know, and Sluggers never released in Others.
I think if all games mentioned above had been made ground-up for Wii, released WW, received the same kind of promotion the Olympics games got, and had been released during corresponding big sports events (Strikers around world cup soccer tournament, Tennis during some Grand Slam event etc.), they might've seen far, far better sales. Compared to the M&S Olympics games, the others were kind of sent out to die, as a matter of speaking.

No disagreeing with anything you said but if you look at Strikers in Others and then Olympics in Others the difference is staggering. Both are Wii games, both released a key times (I believe and Strikers was used as the flagship online title for Others if memory serves) but Olympics is far more popular by a huge margin. Advertising helps yes. But I think the key driver is the M&SatO was the closest thing to a Wii Sports 2 prior to WSR coming out and that drove sales more much than Mario or Sonic or even the Olympics themselves.
Anyway we're getting too off-topic.
