Gamerace said: No debate there. Mario greatly boosted sales of this title. Mario as a brand is huge as people equate Mario with quality and fun (unlike poor Sonic). However, Mario Sluggers, Strikers and Tennis have all just squeaked by 1m so Mario sport titles are not that big. The success of the Olympic games is truly a combination of the three elements - Mario, Sonic and sport mini-games on Wii. |
Yeah, you're probably right. It was a perfect Wii title, more casual than usual sports games. Plus the Olympic games license, plus Mario as an "N seal of quality", plus Sonic... I remember being floored by the number M&S sold. Not to mention frustrated, considering Mario Galaxy sold significantly worse - but that's a different story.
Gotta admit, I'm not a big Sonic fan. I had a Mega Drive back then, played Sonic 1 and 2, plus the Master System one. But I don't think they ever were as good as some people say. Compared to the classic Mario platformers, they were flashy and fast, but that's about it. I even think that the core gameplay of Sonic is it's biggest flaw, cause the sheer speed makes it necessary to run on autopilot most of the time.
