I wouldn't say shooters are the future, since other genres are also getting high reviews. It's just JRPGs need a new direction, since they're becoming repetitive. Maybe, just maybe, Final Fantasy Versus XIII will bring something very new. One thing I think that could've hurt FFXIII's review scores is the linearity. Another that could hurt is the story, since I haven't heard great things about the story of FFXIII.
As for your comparison of FF12 to FF13 and SO3 to SO4...you, um, do know that they're both done by different developers, right?
