If your going with global warming, go back to a point adjecent to it. Just debating global warming would fit better with a geography class. I'd take the statement: "The US should have signed the Kyoto protocol" as a replacement.
Or you could go further back and do something with the treaty of Rome.
I'd also like to point out that your Haïti statement is more of an actuality then history. I mean, we are still giving to them, it's hardly in the past.
IF you want a real statement of classic history, try debating that Julius Ceasar was totally right in declaring war on the SPQR circa 50BC. This made the roman empire just that, an empire over a republic like it used to be. Seeing as the US is also a republic you could have a very fun debate because in the end, what was better for Rome?!
