It's a dilemma. Do you opt for free online and risk losing the online capabilities while you still care about them, or do you pay more money than online play is worth to a lot of people, but at least theoretically have online until nobody cares about it anymore?
I say theoretically because there's still no guarantee that M$ won't decide to cut off Live support for games, just because you're paying for it.
