it got a similar reception in Japan looking at amazon user reviews & famitsu scores + general impressions.

Most people shouldn't be surprised at all.

I think I'm going to pass up on WKC completely.

cool I simply imported it as:

1. Its the first proper JRPG for my JRPG Virgin PS3

2. The other option is SO4 which is even worse apparently

3. The online could keep me addicted, its like a free 2 play MMO

4. I NEED A FILLER BEFORE FF13 TO MAKE TIME GO BY QUICKLY

But I would say if you have a limited budget & want JRPG's wait for FFXIII (confirmed to be awesome) & ROF (unconfirmed as awesome as of yet) in March, pokemon gold remake too.

That's the thing. Heavy Rain, Dante's Inferno, and BioShock 2 in one month...no space for a 4th game. And yeah, as you said, RoF and FFXIII are higher priority.
