This is really not news. They said this a while back. Looking at his last statement about how 3 years ago, the gaming division counted for 70% of the profits - that was 3 years ago. Now, the other divisions are doing great and they have effectively switched. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Sony is having the most profitable year in a while. Their digital cameras, movies, televisions, and laptops are raking in the profits.
Several years ago, they were facing heavy competition from Toshiba and Samsung on their television front. Same with apple on their portable music department.
As far as HDTV penetration is concerned, this year's Black Friday and holiday season is the time when HDTVs go from early adoption phase to early majority phase. Expect a huge transition in the next year or two for HDTVs. Many of my college friends bought / or will be buying an HDTV in the next several months.
As much as many members here wish for it, don't expect them to withdraw from the gaming division this generation. With the PS4, I expect them to make a system for $300 to $400 that breaks even from the start.
"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY." --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
