I don't like the phrase because it supports an arbitrary divide, an "us and them" of gamers and non-gamers. I wouldn't have such a problem with it if it was just literal, like viewers and non-viewers being literally what it sounds like, but in order to be a 'gamer', you don't just have to play games, you don't just have to play games alot, you have to play specific kinds of games alot. Another poster yesterday said that people who play GTA, Halo and Mario aren't necessarily gamers.

 

The sooner we get beyond the notion of 'gamer' as an exclusive club, the sooner gaming will cease to be marginalised by the general public. I don't want to see gaming go the way of the comic book industry.
