Here is as good of a place as any to chime in.
I do remember the time when the prizes were money, and a chance to get rich. Now, look at all the reality TV shows. Almost all of them are a chance to get a job somewhere. Yes, a JOB! How much has the economy fallen that a job ends up being a prize? And now, the bottom of the barrel, a game tester, is what they are giving out?
EDIT: I will add a bit more here by saying that I am not knocking people who do testing for a living. It is work that needs to be done, but it isn't fun. It isn't a prize. It is drudge work, and kudos to those who can make a living at it and keep their sanity. I would say the work can be rewarding, but I have to chuckle at the pitch Sony did by saying it is a gamer's "dream job". Playing for entertainment is VERY different than playing for professional reasons to be assured a quality product gets out (this can be rewarding, not fun). I am not sure where a game tester is going to be able to comment that a part of the game is "boring". I am sure the entry-level area is just for making sure a game doesn't crash and doesn't have bugs. But fun? I don't know if they do that.
