Q: "I had a feeling that Activision would do something outlandish to prevent them from losing money and announcing the formation of a conglomerate on Sunday is that."

Hmm? You're wrong in this statement. Vivendi bought 52% of Activision. Activision didn't do anything.

A: kirolos: "Under the terms of the agreement, Vivendi Games will be merged with a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision."

Vivendi to Contribute Vivendi Games Valued at $8.1 Billion, Plus $1.7 Billion in Cash in Exchange for Approximately 52% Stake in Activision Blizzard at Closing; Total Transaction Valued at $18.9 Billion

Vivendi games division is gone to Ativision, but Vivendi now owns the whole thing.  I am betting this is more a plan for Vivendi to get their games division to be useful for something other than the next Blizzard title.
