Sorry, but the reason why they're profitable is that they know how to run a good business. If they feel that they can get the same or better performance out of using less resources, then it is pretty much the law of the markets that they do so. At the end of the day, employees are a factor of production - a cost to the company, not people, and Microsoft wants to lower its dependence on these.
