I never understood that one myself. I guess that YLoD sounded better than "One Blinking Yellow Light, Followed By Three Beeps and Infinite Blinking Red Lights of Death."

I think the one yellow light only appears if there is a hardware failure. Fan test will also result in a blinking red light when finished until you reset the console (flip the power off).
