In all honesty, the exclusivity was more based on selling xbox 360's then selling the game itself. The promise of DLC did push some decent hardware due to it being exclusive to the 360. While I'm not sure if Microsoft knew at the time that Sony were so willing to pick up the DLC once the contract expired, I do know that Microsoft knew they were signing timed exclusive instead of a fullscale exclusive. Microsoft hit Sony where it hurt with the lack of exclusivity. They successfully took a franchise that was synonymous with the Playstation Brand and made it more successful on the 360.
