I have a question for you guys. If Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 had a monthly fee, would you guys pay it? I think we're playing with fire if this game ever comes to the west and becomes a hit (though I doubt it will come to the west, and if it did, I doubt it would be a hit).
Monster Hunter bills itself as an MMO, but other than the lobby/staging area, it seems like you basically get a party of 4 together and go to instances to fight (so basically there's no huge overworld for everyone to wander around, a separate world gets created for your party). Yes, the game gets updated every so often, but is it really worth paying $15 a month for?
To go back to my MW2 example, imagine that instead of making MW2, Infinity Ward and Activision decided that they had a better way to make money. They would release Modern Warfare 1, and make it pay to play. $15 a month. And instead of making a brand new game ala Modern Warfare 2, they would just release incremental upgrades to Modern Warfare 1 until they arrive at what Modern Warfare 2 is. So over 2 years, instead of paying $120 for both MW1 and MW2, you pay $60 for MW1, then $15 * 24 months = $360 for a total of $420. Is it worth it?
I can totally understand why a game like World of Warcraft needs a monthly fee. But MHF seems akin to Guild Wars where everything is instanced. And funny enough, Guild Wars requires no monthly fee. Do you guys think a monthly fee for MHF is still worth it?
Obviously, I'm painting a worse case scenario where every game becomes pay to play, and instead of making sequels, we get incremental upgrades that end up costing us more. But it's something to think about, especially with some of the comments that Activision has made:
