He WAS brilliant in Magnolia. Why? Because all he had to do was play Tom Cruise, Douchebag Extraordinaire. He nailed that one out of the park.

Ha, I KNEW you would step in as soon as Magnolia is mentioned. Look at it this way: A real outstanding actor, like - say - Philip Seymour Hoffman or Robert Duvall would have actually played the role, not himself in a role. Cruise playing Cruise doesn't make him a good actor.

I didn't say he was a good actor. I merely said that he was good at playing Tom Cruise, Douchebag Extraordinaire, which is exactly what the role required.

It's the same reason I won't give Mickey Rourke any credit for The Wrestler. The dude was just re-living his life. No kudos for that.
