Ha, I KNEW you would step in as soon as Magnolia is mentioned. Look at it this way: A real outstanding actor, like - say - Philip Seymour Hoffman or Robert Duvall would have actually played the role, not himself in a role. Cruise playing Cruise doesn't make him a good actor.
