One year headstart for starters.

Good advertising by MS and crap advertising by Sony (though it's improved now).
Xbox Live- So much better than PSN for a long while though PSN is now starting to put up a good fight.
Some very popular franchises such as Halo and Gears have helped capture the HUGE adolescent teenage market that love video gaming and love blood and guts and running and gunning and being a super cool one man soldier that can take on a planet of enemies (with a buddy too! (co-op)).
It was just the better console for the first few years though now it's debatable.
