The drive is capable of playing DVDs. Homebrew allows the Wii to do it.

Last year Nintendo realeased a new revision of Wii´s which made it inpossible to play dvd´s even with the homebrew apps but on Wii´s before that revision you can play dvd´s

it disables to read dvd-r discs and only originals work.
Someone with a new wii have to use the USB to play backups.

are you talking games or dvds in general? i know burned movies still work as a friend of mine got a fresh console and the method i mentioned still works.
