I'm not sure why everyone seems to think dwarves should be Scottish. I'm relatively certain there's a race joke in there somewhere.

Tolkien basically wrote his dwarves as tiny Scotts and it bled over into Dungeons and Dragons which carried over into pretty much every modern fantasy telling
