That pretty much tells the whole story right there. Sony's market share shrunk by over three times, Microsoft's market share more than doubled and Nintendo's market share increased slightly more than four-fold. Huge triumph for Nintendo, great moral victory for Microsoft, huge dissapointment for Sony.
This gen is still young and has only reached slightly more than 3/4 of the unit volume of last gen (136m v. 180m for last gen's consoles) but even taking that into account, the losses for Sony are massive. With numbers like this, it's impossible that all these Nintendo converts are "new gamers". It looks like a good chunk of the PS2 base defected to the Wii. Has to be the case. If not, where are those 100m+ PS2 owners without a PS3?

I think a huge chuck of PS2 owners defected to the 360.. Especially in America. I think most of the "new Wii" owners are casual gamers.

That is true but also take into account that PS2 alone = 134m sales. Xbox 360 + PS3 combined = less than 70m sales. So either loads of PS2 owners still haven`t entered the new gen or a good chunk of them defected to Wii or handheld exclusity (I know in Japan, the latter is a big factor). I know it sounds crazy (seeing how it`s normally taken as common knowledge that PS2 owners migrated to Ps360) but with the numbers as they are, there`s gotta be a ton of PS2 owners who are Wii-only owners console-wise this gen.
As a current gen late adopter (I got a 360 early spring 2009), I know a lot of PS2 owners like me waited awhile to upgrade to this gen but by now I don`t think there are too many left. There may be a possibiliity they are waiting for the PS3 and a 360 hard drive model (Arcade doesn`t count) to hit sweet spot pricing ($200-250) though. The PS2 peaked at $200 and $300 now is still a good bit more than $200 then (taking into account inflation). In this economy especially, some may still be waiting. With Xbox 360 out for 4+ years and PS3 and Wii out 3+ years though, you`d imagine that patience would wear thin though unless you real don`t care much about console gaming anymore or you really, really do need to save money.
