A GOTY for me needs to have an epic long playtime, or major replayability, or a super online mode, or something more than a 10-12 hour (albeit great) one time experience. |
Uncharted 2 had no problem fulfilling GOTY, and it didn't have a long playtime, super online mode, or something more than 12 hours. It was just THAT DAMN GOOD! I expect the same of God of War III, even if it isn't incredibly innovative.

Well, I disagree. Uncharted 2 is my second favorite online game right now, so it fits my profile pretty well. It also has a lot more collectables and unlockables than the God of War games typically do (3 might be different though, I can't say that I know) which add to replayability. The games that stick with me do so because I have played them so many times I know them by heart and they become a part of my everyday life. I know it sounds weird but by that I mean that I see someone and think, huh she kinda looks like Ashley from Mass Effect or I'll hear some music that reminds me of KoToR and I have to rush and replay the game. God of War, although my favorite beat em up game ever, doesn't do that for me.

But....................sometimes games don't need all that to win GOTY. Bioshock surely didn't. There are games with far more playtime and more robust online that didn't beat Uncharted 2 for GOTY. It's all in how the game is received, what it does to the industry. God of War III is going to set it ablaze, and that's what it'll be remembered for, very much like Bioshock in 2007.
For me, a GOTY shouldn't be determined by one individual, but what it does for the industry as a whole. |
We may be at an impass here. There is certainly merit to what you are saying, I just have a different idea as to what constitues a GOTY to me personally, and GoW won't do it. I believe it probably will win a few GOTY awards, but won't deserve it in my opinion. Not in a year with Heavy Rain, FFXIII and GT5, all of which are either groundbreaking (Heavy Rain) or will give you so much more of an experience for a far longer period of time (FFXII and GT5).
