Hey, hate the hype, not Cloud! He hasn't done anything wrong I agree with the rest of your post, however; FF7 needs to be left alone, especially since Squeenix seem to be having a enough trouble nowadays making new games that the fans like. 7 ain't broke, so they shouldn't go trying to fix it. Actually, they can remake 2D games; all they really have to do is make them 3D, so there's a smaller risk of messing up. Also, I can't believe that no-one has mentioned Chrono Trigger! (or maybe someone has and I wasn't paying attention) It's the best 2D game by Square IMO, and they wouldn't have to spend a penny; they'd just have to stop sending C&Ds to fan groups on condition that Square have all the rights to whatever remake they have in the works. |
I agree with best 2D game by Square (or best game period), but I love it in its original form. This is kind of what bothers me - I don't feel 2D is inferior to 3D, in fact I tend to prefer it over 3D - it's got its own charm, and it makes the game move much quicker (better overall gameplay). The difference between 2D and 3D is not unlike manga vs anime, I think. With 2D/manga I get to blow through far more content in a shorter amount of time.
Take FFIV DS - it brought some great things with it, sure, but I can't say I'd want the same done for CT or FFVI. Everything is just so much slower... if you compare gameplay footage of the SNES and DS versions, you might be surprised. The FFIV remake was still decent, mainly because the original had a dated interface, while the GBA version's music sucks. On the other hand, CT has already been updated on the DS, and it's perfect. The way the game flows (speeding through areas, talking while moving, no load times, etc) has a lot to do with why I think it's the best RPG ever.
I say, leave the 2D greats alone! If these must be remade, update the interface, resolution, 2D art, and possibly improve dialogue / add animated cutscenes (even though I personally keep the CT ones off). I'm sure this is probably impossible, as the costs wouldn't match the sales, but... whatever! My other unlikely hope is for 3D remakes that move as fast as the 2D originals, but I don't see that happening.
It's a shame we're stuck entirely with the anime-like games, I want my "manga!" Nowadays it's always realistic 3D graphics taking precedence over everything, even if it makes the games 3x slower
(FFIX or LO are the worst offenders I've seen, you can tell how bad the loads are from the battle themes, lol)
