You will know what is going on, but you will miss all sorts of cool little links I would imagine.
The IGN review confirmed as much. You will really enjoy this game on it's own, but adore it as a continuation of your game in the first.
If playing the first isn't an option that is one thing. But if you can, play it before this one.
