Actually your first link also describes the fact that the Mayans only said the end of these counts are major events where something bad usually happens on a global scale. Not the end of the world in a religious sense at all. More like a major plague or something. The black plague started on one of these years as did WWII and the end of Mayan society to the European invaders. So, basically, yes something major might happen, but, no more than it could happen tomorrow. As plenty of horrible things happened on many other dates that coincide with absolutely nothing on the Mayan calender.
