"Well I think originality (when a game is good) will always factor into reviews. There's something particularly special about playing something not just great, but something new and different. I'm not sure if I would think that games like Katamari Damacy and Flower were as good as I thought they were if they hadn't been original experiences."
Not denying there is a wonder factor in something new, but if they had been poorly implemented and unpolished, the newness would not have mattered.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
