you think added effects need time? Replay's are usually instant.
In Forza 3 the replays are instant and the graphics are obviously better with added motion blur for instance. It doesn't take much to do that on the fly when you don't have to work out where each car is going and the AI of the drivers or the physics of what's happening to each car etc. Everything is pre-dtermined by the race the player just had so resources are freed up.
