I think the reason they make you control characters in different scenarios is to make you familiar with everyone who will eventually be a part of the main cast. Let's just put it like this, if the game didn't make me use Hope (who I'm slowly starting to like BTW), I would have never had him in my party. But using him actually opened me up to him quite a bit. I've heard that very soon I will be able to take full control over my party. Also, the game is quite reminicint of FFX, but X mixed with VII & VIII would be a better way of putting it.
I'm going with Lightning, Vanille and Fang in my main party.
