The possibly lower sales of Gears 1 because of possibly worse marketing, would probably have been compensated with the sales of Gears 2 and 3 because of word of mouth. Sure, Gears of War was a revelation in 2006. But a large part of its success came from releasing early on the Xbox 360. If Epic had to develop it on the PS3 it would have released in 2007 around the same time as Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4. It would have sold less on 2 systems with greater development effort than on the one system because timing is very important with consoles and being early with great products is the best way forward for establishing a new I.P.
