Largely because it's unnecessary bloatware and utter crap, the problem is not really about dedicated servers. Take a look online at the problems people have had with losing save games or the hoops they've had to jump through to get DLC. Steam's fine as there are actually benefits to using it. GfWL, especially on a game bought through Steam, is just an extraneous layer, another thing that can go wrong and it often does.
