Nintendo designs hardware and software to work well together. They wouldn't be able to do that if they only designed the software, would they?

Exactly.  I remember back when Mario 64 came out and EGM was questioning how some games didn't work well with the N64 controller.  Nintendo pretty much said "We don't give a fuck!  That controller was made for OUR game."  (it was implied, anyway). 

Right Nintendo hardware is created for the software they create. So now you would have them force to develop their games. Based off someone else systems. Think how the N64 and Mario needing analog. The first playstation and saturn controllers. Didn't have that so a game like Mario 64 out of the question.
