However yes, Crystal Bearers, Versus XIII, Agito XIII and what not are not related to there main older cousins, making them spin off's, though that doesn't mean storyline nor gameplay well be any lesser to the likes of the numbered final fantasies, for example, i enjoyed dirge of cerberous more then i enjoyed both X, and X-2, and most normal based final fantasies. I agree with you, I don't see the label spin-off to be derogatory. Heck, back in the Snes days, I enjoyed Mystic Quest much more than FFV, it was very good to me ;)
I also enjoyed Dirge of Cerberus, the game mechanics were pretty awesome, and the fights were astounding, especially the last one agaisnt Omega :D
