"Playstation is a poison.."

"The Playstation console is a poison that will lead capitalistic children straight to hell." - was the fierce criticism poised against video games by Hugo Chavez. The verbal attack against electronic entertainment took place during a morning audition of "Alo Presidente" which serves as a propaganda tube for Chavez and is emitted on venezuelan national tv channels.

During the audition Chavez called upon venezuelan producers in the electronic entertainment industry to focus on "educational" and "traditionally symbolic" toys or dolls. The president claimed that : "such prepared toys should be found on store shelves as fast as possible in order to replace their capitalistic counterparts such as Barbie dolls that have nothing in common with venezuelan culture."

Chavez continued his speech by attacking Nintendo, which according to him "promotes vanity , individualism and violence."

It was Sony and it's Playstation console that earned the most criticism from the venezuelan leader:

"Games made for the Playstation are a poison. A lot of them teach how to kill. There was even a situation where they (western developers - red.) placed me in a game where the mission was " we have to find Chavez and kill him" - Chavez continued

The president went on to say that games that teach "bombarding cities or throwing grenades" are sold by capitalistic countries which by doing so "are preparing themselves a way to sell weapons of war."

"They promote smoking cigarettes, drug and alcohol use, which they later sell. That is the way of capitalism, the way straight to hell" - was noted by the president.

In October of 2009 a new law was passed in Venezuela which has made the selling of "brutal" games illegal with the sentence for breaking the new law being as high as 5 years in prison.

So what do you guys think? The man's gone off the deep end? Seems like standard practice in any country where you have a totalitarian rule with a communistic/heavy socialistic touch.
