I'm not sure why some are seeing this 200hz refresh rate standard as some sort of diabolical conspiracy to force consumers to buy new displays.

Just like HD media, nobody "forced" anyone to buy anything; it simply became available and if you valued the benefits of the improved picture (and many still insist SD DVDs look "just as good" to their eyes) then you went out and bought a BD or HD-DVD player and possibly a 1080p display if you didn't already have an older HDTV.

The only consumers who seem to react negatively to the release of new technologies and standards are the same ones who don't want to pay out the extra money certain premium features command.

Again, nobody is "forcing" anyone to upgrade or instantly adopt emerging technologies, but some of those who like to have the most current, even if it's just to satisfy their sense of ego to SAY they have the latest and greatest, simply don't like it when what they currently have (often a source of great pride) is no longer considered on the bleeding edge.

But standards stay still for no one when it comes to new tech, and ultimately more people benefit the longer a given technology is available and the more accessible it becomes in price, assuming adoption becomes widespread.
