Just an FYI guys, the wii remote can definitly tell the distance from the TV. It's called triangulation. As explained above, if you have two points of reference with a known distance apart and you introduce a third point (in this case the IR camera on the remote itself), you can quite easily measure the exact distance between those points of reference. This is the same way way GPS systems work.
For example....
Sensor Bar
50cm
X--------Y
\ a b /
\ /
\ /
Z
If you know that "X" and "Y' are say 50cm apart, and you can measure the angles "a" and "b" using the camera, then you can calculate the distance between X and Z, or betwen Y and Z, which gives you the distance.
