Actually... if it's sophisticated enough inside the wii remote could tell the Z axis providing it was facing the IR cameras based on it's X & Y and the strength of the IR signal.. though I'm not sure the Wii-remote has that ability >.> (It'd also need to be calibrated to fully know where you are relative to the TV which clearly can be done I just dunno if it can fully understand distance.) As far as adding more LED's it makes a stronger signal but it wouldn't be more accurate... so long as the item can determine the size of your screen it'd be pretty damn accurate regardless...
